Kind of messy

I know, I know; Alison and I haven't managed to blog as much as we'd like to recently, but of course the world doesn't stop spinning, so all the bloggable things have piled up... and so, this post will be kind of messy.

But messy is good, so here we go (in no particular order):

If you haven't already, get yourself over to the BBC website's BSL survey. Apparently it's been around for a while, but I think it's an ongoing thing? Warning: It keeps making my browser crash, so if you're a Firefox user you might have to use Internet Explorer instead. *sigh*

Another thing we've found online is a student film called HOW MUCH CAN YOU REALLY HEAR?, which is up for some kind of award. Basically it's a Deaf Awareness type thing, where a hearing bloke gets his head bandaged up for the day so that he can see what it's like to be deaf, apparently. I hate, hate, hate this kind of thing because it misses all the important stuff, like how the bloke goes to a lecture and can't understand a thing -- in real life, we know he'd have a terp or a notetaker, or at least SOMETHING, but obviously he didn't. To be fair, the bloke didn't make fun of Deaf people, just saying it was all "really weird" about 50 times, and he didn't enjoy it at all. I'm not surprised.

In my opinion, these kind of simulation things are crap because they only show the medical, negative side of things, and I'm not sure how seriously he took it anyway. BUT... a deafie was on the production team, which is probably supposed to make it OK, and probably means that I have no sense of humour. Why not download the film and watch it yourself? It has to be said that the subtitles were great!

Moving swiftly on to the tragic news that Cochlear sales have gone down in China, due to (amongst other reasons) 'a shortage of healthcare workers' - oh dear - and 'identification of patients'. Identification of patients?! That makes me think of CI surgeons roaming around trying to paint big red crosses on Deafies' front doors so that they know which ones are to be implanted, like how they did years ago with the London Plague (or something). Whatever, it just makes me want to run and hide! Freaky.

However, Cochlear fans will be cheered up by the news that 'Cochlear Limited (COH) has reported an increase in net profit after tax of 17% to $57.1 million for the six months to December 31 2007.' (There's a less waffly article here.) No problems there then.

Whew, I'm glad we Deafies are still nice and profitable for them(!)

And that's all from GOD this fine afternoon. Goodbye!

Jen
